The country’s leading safer gambling campaign is inviting fans from across the country to get involved in a five-a-side tournament against former-pros as part of its Bet Regret initiative.

GambleAware’s high-profile Bet Regret campaign will be holding its inaugural competition this summer, giving fans a chance to take on a team of former-pros and former-England internationals in London.

The winners of regional rounds, held between 2nd and 28th July at 26 local Powerleague centres, will go forward to the national final on Sunday 4th August in Shoreditch – where they’ll take on a team made up of Shaun Wright-Phillips, Carlton Cole, Glen Johnson, Paul Konchesky and David James.

Wright-Phillips, former Manchester City and England winger, said: “You only have to watch football on TV to see how many betting adverts there are, and how easy it is to place impulsive bets that you might immediately regret.

“I’m looking forward to playing in the Bet Regret Cup and encouraging a lot of young lads to think about their betting behaviour in the future.”

The Bet Regret campaign debuted in February this year, featuring adverts of supporters placing impulsive bets via ubiquitous smartphone apps. The five-a-side cup is the latest addition to the campaign, which will run alongside ongoing advertising and outreach activities to promote the help and support available for those who experience problem gambling.

FSF deputy chief exec David Rose said: “Putting a bet on is a normal and enjoyable part of the match-day routine for many supporters, but it’s important that fans know where the line is between a harmless wager and problem gambling.

“This is why Bet Regret has resonated so strongly with supporters and we’re sure this five-a-side tournament will be an excellent addition to the campaign – good luck to all those taking part.”
